Benedetta and Domitilla, aged 12 and 8, vanished from San Cataldo in Caltanissetta on a Friday evening before being discovered the following afternoon inside a local clothing store. According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Caltanissetta, no third parties were involved, and the investigation into suspected kidnapping has been closed with a request for dismissal after authorities determined the minors voluntarily hid inside the shop to emulate a viral YouTube challenge.
The Disappearance and Discovery in San Cataldo
The incident began when the two young sisters entered a clothing store managed by a Chinese woman, taking advantage of closing operations without the knowledge of their father, Alessandro. As detailed by Prosecutor Salvatore De Luca, the children deliberately slipped inside with the intent of spending the entire night inside the commercial establishment. They remained concealed within the premises, specifically locking themselves in a bathroom, while an intensive search got underway. The father initially hoped to locate his daughters independently and formally filed a missing person report the following day. The 21-hour ordeal ended during the afternoon reopening when the store’s manager discovered the minors and raised the alarm, prompting Carabinieri officers to secure the location and conduct medical evaluations.
YouTube Challenges and Digital Emulation
Investigators from the Carabinieri Provincial Command analyzed digital devices available to the minors and discovered a clear trail pointing toward online media consumption. Prosecutor De Luca confirmed that one of the sisters repeatedly viewed videos on YouTube and social media channels featuring prominent influencers who hide inside shops, warehouses, or other types of places, eluding security measures to evade detection overnight. These specific videos accumulate millions of views. One of the children absorbed this media and orchestrated the plan, involving her sister in the experiment. Alessandro, who recently obtained exclusive custody of his six children, described the incident to ANSA as a “marachella” born from online exposure, noting that the children discussed wanting to replicate a challenge seen online, possibly on YouTube, titled “24 ore in un negozio”.
Protective Measures and Institutional Warnings
Following their medical checks, all six siblings were transferred to a protected residential community under an urgent protective intervention governed by Article 403 of the Italian Civil Code. Rocco Cosentino, the Public Prosecutor for Minors at Caltanissetta, explained that this measure guarantees the immediate safety and well-being of the children while the Juvenile Court determines their future placement. In the wake of the event, Prosecutor Cosentino issued a direct warning regarding the unfiltered risks embedded within digital platforms:
“I social fanno parte della vita dei nostri ragazzi, sono luoghi di incontro, di espressione e di conoscenza, ma usarli richiede consapevolezza perché dietro uno schermo possono nascondersi rischi concreti: cyberbullismo, adescamento, diffusione incontrollata di immagini personali.”
Authorities emphasize that families, schools, and institutions must foster digital literacy and open lines of communication. Cosentino concluded with a direct appeal to young people:
“Se qualcosa vi spaventa, vi umilia o vi mette a disagio, parlatene con un adulto di fiducia. Chiedere aiuto è un gesto di coraggio. Nessuno deve sentirsi solo davanti ai rischi della rete.”
The Caltanissetta Juvenile Court will evaluate upcoming reports to decide whether the children can safely return to their father’s custody.
