Mitsotakis: In Cairo together with European leaders the Prime Minister | Foreign Policy: News and News – 2024-03-18 16:26:05

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected to be in Cairo today, along with Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Italy’s Giorgia Meloni, Belgium’s Alexander de Croix and Austria’s Chancellor Karl Neuhammer.

Purpose of the visit of Kyriakos Mitsotakistogether with the rest of the political leaders, in Cairo, is the recognition of the important and critical role of Egypt in the Southern Mediterranean and African region in the midst of multiple challenges, with immigration and energy at the forefront.

The government notes that Kyriakos Mitsotakis has long highlighted the importance of European support for Egypt. It has also highlighted, they add, the importance of promoting a strategic cooperation agreement between the EU and Egypt.

He was also the first European leader to highlight the importance of Egypt for the EU and for stability in the region, a few days after the terrorist attacks by Hamas against Israel (at the emergency meeting of the European Council via video conference).

Cairo’s role is becoming more pivotal due to developments in Gaza and challenges such as immigration, for the management of which the EU seeks cooperation with Egypt.

It is recalled that in 2022 Greece concluded an agreement with Egypt on migration and mobility. The prime minister – who had also participated in the “Peace Summit” for Gaza at the invitation of Abdel Fatah Al Sisi last October in Cairo – will have a bilateral meeting with the President of Egypt, followed by a meeting with the President of the European Union Commission and European leaders with Mr. Sisi.

Greece maintains an excellent level of relations with Egypt, with which they share a common understanding of the wider Mediterranean region and finding solutions for stability and peace in the region. Our country was the first to highlight the strategic importance of Egypt and for the transfer of “green” electricity to Europe with the Greece-Egypt electricity interconnection project (GREGY) which can transfer clean energy to the EU and which joined the public projects of European interest, while the cooperation with Cairo on immigration is of key importance.
