A Near-Fatal Spin on the M4 Highway
An extraordinary motorway near-miss on the M4 highway captured by Magyar Koncessziós Infrastrukturális Fejlesztő Zrt. (MKIF) cameras left a black vehicle heavily damaged against the median barrier while dozens of motorists simply drove past the scene. The incident occurred on October 15, 2026, along the stretch between Cegléd and Abony, showcasing how quickly a high-speed driving lapse can turn a routine commute into an action-film wreck.
High-Speed Lane-Splitting and the Loss of Control
Footage released by the state motorway operator shows a car traveling in the outer lane at a speed significantly higher than the surrounding traffic. As the vehicle rapidly approached the slower traffic ahead, a catastrophic collision was avoided by mere meters when the driver violently jerked the steering wheel at the last possible microsecond.
That sudden evasive maneuver, however, cost the driver all control over the chassis. The car slammed directly into the interior metal guardrail before spinning out completely and coming to a rest in the emergency stopping lane.
The Bystander Effect on the Motorway
Once the car ground to a halt in the emergency lane, the wrecked vehicle’s driver quickly emerged from the cabin. Yet, the security camera feed revealed a troubling secondary hazard: a total of nine distinct vehicles drove right past the accident scene without stopping to render aid.

The motorist who had narrowly escaped being rear-ended in the initial lane-change panic pulled over briefly, watched the aftermath unfold for a short duration, and then chose to drive away from the wreckage. MKIF Zrt. management explicitly highlighted this collective hesitation, reminding the public that stopping to assist those in peril is not merely a moral imperative under Hungarian law, but a strict legal obligation. Failing to provide assistance in such emergencies carries severe criminal liability.
Intervention and the White Van Exception
While the stream of passing commuters ignored the stranded motorist, assistance eventually materialized in a practical form. MKIF Zrt. publicly expressed gratitude to the driver of a white delivery van who bucked the trend of indifference by pulling over to secure the scene and offer help.

Highway Safety Realities
Motorway authorities reiterated that while stopping to assist is mandatory, drivers must execute emergency stops carefully to prevent triggering secondary multi-car collisions. Distractions remain a primary catalyst for such highway emergencies, with transport safety analysts frequently noting that glancing away for even a brief moment at high speeds can turn an automobile into a runaway hazard covering hundreds of meters blind.
