MMR Group provides $5 million lead gift for LSU foster care endowment

First Lady Melania Trump has announced a $7.2 million endowment at Louisiana State University designed to provide permanent financial support for students who have experienced foster care. The announcement, made during a visit to the university, establishes the MMR Fostering the Future Endowed Scholarship, a fund intended to bridge the gap between foster care and higher education.

A $7.2 million commitment to permanent support

The endowment is the result of a massive collective effort. Baton Rouge-based MMR Group provided a $5 million lead gift, which was matched by contributions from 75 LSU Foundation donors. The total fund, currently at $7.2 million and growing, is projected to generate approximately $288,000 annually in perpetuity for eligible students.

While earlier support for these students was more limited in scope, this new scholarship offers a broader safety net. For example, an initial commitment from Zoom is currently funding tuition, fees, and books for 14 LSU students this fall. However, the MMR endowment provides a perpetual source of funding and adds the flexibility to cover room and board—costs that often prevent foster youth from completing their degrees.

From partner school to a national network

LSU was named a partner school in the Fostering the Future network in early 2026. The network, launched as part of the First Lady’s Be Best initiative, consists of 26 leading colleges and universities dedicated to preparing foster youth for leadership roles. The program’s reach extends to other major institutions, including the University of Alabama, a fellow partner school.

“LSU gave me opportunities that enriched my life and forged the foundation for a successful career,” said James B. “Pepper” Rutland, founder of MMR Group and an LSU alumnus. “At MMR, we’re proud to create those same opportunities for young people who are ready to build their own futures. Generations of LSU students who have been part of the foster care system will have the resources to earn their degrees and pursue everything in life that a strong education makes possible.”

Addressing the foster care achievement gap

The scale of the investment responds to difficult realities reported by the National Youth Foster Institute. According to their data, 50% of foster children finish high school, and 3% of former foster children obtain a college degree. The transition out of the system is often marked by instability: 20% will become homeless after aging out of the foster care system, and 1 in 2 will have gainful employment by age 24.

LSU President Wade Rousse framed the endowment as a tool for economic mobility. “Access is a top priority for LSU, because circumstances should not determine whether talent and ambition thrive,” Rousse said. “MMR Group’s visionary investment in LSU’s Fostering the Future partnership will be transformative for youth from foster care who aspire to earn an LSU degree. MMR’s generosity will forever have a direct link to the upward economic mobility and long-term success of every student who receives this scholarship.”

The scale of MMR Group’s involvement

The donation is led by MMR Group, the nation’s largest privately owned open-shop electrical and instrumentation contractor. Headquartered in Baton Rouge and founded by Rutland—a former LSU football player—the company employs more than 15,000 people and operates over 30 district offices across North America.

LSU Foundation President & CEO Krista Raney noted that the impact of the gift will be felt long after the current academic year. “Pepper Rutland’s leadership and MMR’s generosity are creating an extraordinary legacy,” Raney stated. “Young people who have experienced foster care will arrive at LSU years and decades from now knowing that someone invested in their potential before they ever set foot on campus.”
