modders decided to recreate a remake of the first Half-Life on the engine of the first Half-Life

Portal PC Gamer noticed that a group of modders from the Lambda Team have been working on Black Mesa Classic, an unofficial remake of a sci-fi shooter for several years Black Mesa.

Recall that Black Mesa (originally Black Mesa: Source) is a Valve-approved remake of the first Half-Life. The Crowbar Collective has recreated the iconic game in the Source engine, expanding it and redesigning many of the levels.

Lambda Team back in 2019 (the release version of Black Mesa was released in March 2020) set out to port Crowbar Collective’s rethinking of Half-Life to the original game’s GoldSrc engine.

Over the past time, development has progressed markedly: 4th of July demo out. Due to a last-minute error, the “probe” is now unavailable (some still managed to play), but they promise to fix it.

The trial version includes a We Got Hostiles level with weapons and enemies created by the Lambda Team for their reimagining. The developers promise several surprises and differences from the versions in Black Mesa and the original Half-Life.

Modders see several reasons for the appearance of Black Mesa Classic: to make the first Half-Life more realistic and atmospheric, and the content of Black Mesa more accessible (the demake will not need a powerful PC).

Lambda Team is currently in need of specialists, so the final version of the mod may be far from complete. It remains to be hoped that Black Mesa Classic will stay in development for less than Black Mesa itself – it has been in the making for almost 15 years.
