Modern Medicine vs. Folk Remedies: A Mother’s Dilemma in Caring for her Sick Child

I become a terrible panicker if I start to get sick. Bad thoughts immediately pop into my head that I have something serious and that I will die soon.

Even more terrifying are the articles on the Internet that I begin to read to identify the symptoms and causes of the disease.

But these are still flowers. That’s when my daughter starts getting sick and it completely blows my mind. Even if she coughs once, I immediately rush to the pharmacy for medicine. And I immediately begin to treat her, because I am afraid of missing the moment and making the situation worse.

My mother is wildly horrified when she sees that I am stuffing my daughter with pills and mixtures without any reason or reason.

“The child must develop immunity,” she scolds. – And every time you sneeze, you shove pills into Alice, which only makes things worse.

But I completely disagree with her. I think it’s better to play it safe than to run to doctors and end up in the hospital. We even have a family doctor whom I call day and night.

That morning I urgently needed to leave for work. I asked my mother to look after Alice, because the kindergarten where my daughter goes to was quarantined due to the flu epidemic and a large number of sick children.

I told my mother to be very careful, since the girl had been in contact with sick children, and I was afraid that she, too, might catch this nasty thing.

During the whole day I did not have a free minute to call home and find out how Alice was feeling. When I returned in the evening, I saw this picture.

The daughter lies on the bed completely undressed, and her mother rubs vodka on her.

– What’s going on here? – I asked excitedly. – Is Alice sick?

“I’m sick,” my mother answered, “the temperature is high, we can’t bring it down.”

– Why didn’t you call me? – I was indignant.

– So, how could you help us? – Mom asked a question. – You wouldn’t be able to come anyway, but I didn’t want to call and upset you.

“I would call the doctor to come and examine Alice,” I said. – Suddenly something serious happened.

– Don’t worry, all children get sick. It’s a common cold. “I rubbed my granddaughter with vodka, now the temperature will go down,” the mother stood her ground.

“You know that you shouldn’t rub vodka on people with a fever, especially on children,” I didn’t give up.

-Who told you such nonsense? – Mom was surprised. – All our lives we have been rubbing ourselves and making compresses from vodka. It helps better than any of your medications.

“All doctors say that,” I answered sharply. – It has long been proven that rubbing with vodka is harmful, especially for young children.

Mom turned away with a dissatisfied look. I dialed our doctor’s number, but for some reason he didn’t answer.

“That’s because you’ve already bothered him with your calls,” my mother grumbled. – As soon as you do, you call him right away! Poor doctor! He probably already regretted getting in touch with you a hundred times already.

“I’ll call an ambulance now,” I said, not paying attention to my mother’s lamentations.

– Why an ambulance? – Mom didn’t understand.

– What kind of stupid questions? – I started to get angry. – To come and examine Alice and give her an injection for fever.

“The temperature will drop now,” my mother continued, “the vodka compress has already begun to take effect.”

“I’m not going to sit and wait for your folk methods to take effect,” I answered dissatisfied. – I am a mother, and I myself decide what is best for my child.

“Well, if so,” my mother was offended, “since you don’t want to listen to the advice of an experienced adult woman, I’d better go home.”

I didn’t stop her.

I thought: “It’s better for my mother to go to herself, and not teach me how to treat my own child.”

Maybe in the last century these methods were effective, but today medicine has already made great strides forward, and almost any disease can be cured with the help of medications.
