The Army’s next major armament program is the modernization of the powerful Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS).
The upgrade of the powerful MLRS Multiple Launch Missile System that will be implemented on behalf of the Army comes after the purchase of 35 UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters and the acquisition of 62 plus 20 Bradley Armored Fighting Vehicles.
According to information from Onalert.gr, the program is high on the relevant list of the Army General Staff after prioritizing the needs, with the relevant negotiations starting in the coming period.
This is the program that was passed and approved by the relevant committee of the Parliament at the end of 2023, but did not proceed after the decision to review all the equipment programs, based on the needs and the 2024-2030 agenda. The original plan provided for the modernization of a total of 24 of the 36 launchers at a cost of 1 billion 81 million euros. However, according to information from Onalert.gr, the final decision concerns the modernization of a smaller number of launchers, namely up to 12, with the aim of reducing the cost by half, i.e. approximately half a billion euros. The rest of the launchers will remain as they are and use the existing missiles, which were acquired with the launchers.
The program is expected to be implemented by the manufacturer Lockheed Martin through an intergovernmental agreement with the US, while the negotiation will start almost from scratch. The aim is for part of the program to be carried out in Greece with the participation of the domestic defense industry, as the original agreement provided for the transfer of the MLRS to the US for all modernization work to be carried out there. While the schedule for the completion of the program is expected to be cut in half with the delivery of the last launcher within five years after the signing of the agreement.
The modernization of the Greek MLRS in M270A2 configuration foresees a complete change essentially in the entire System and concerns a new 600 hp engine and drive system, a new Fire Control system and reinforced armor. While the new launchers will have the ability to use new ammunition, such as GMLRS with a range of up to 150 km regardless of weather conditions, but also powerful guided ballistic missiles with a range starting from 60 km and reaching 500 km. These missiles, in addition to the M270 MLRS, can also use the M142 HIMARS launchers. The biggest cost of the modernization of the Greek MLRS in a percentage that reaches 75% concerns the new ammunition.
A total of 14 countries, including Turkey, have in their arsenal the American-made Multiple Rocket Launcher System (MLRS), but Greece also has the very powerful MGM-140 ATACMS missiles in its “quiver”. The Land Army began to receive the MLRS in 1994, while in 1998 it proceeded with a second order forming two PEP Squadrons, the 192 and 193, in Lagada and Eleftheroupoli respectively. which belong to the 1st Army.
It is a weapon system which, as it has already been proven on the battlefields, with the most emphatic example of Ukraine, is a real power multiplier with the possibility of precision strikes deep inside enemy positions and against all kinds of targets.
