“Big snowflakes in Malmedy and Jalhay. It’s already complicated on the roads,” Virginie alerts us this Monday morning. Indeed, as announced by the Royal Meteorological Institute (IRM), snow still fell in several corners of Belgium. At 7 a.m., the ground was already covered in a fine white coat in Waimes.

A few minutes later, the layer was even thicker in Ovifat.

Yellow alert

As Virginie told us, the situation is therefore complicated on the roads. The IRM has also issued a yellow alert for slippery conditions until 10 a.m. tomorrow. “Today and overnight, an active disturbance will cause further snowfall in the Ardennes. This morning, snow will initially fall, above approximately 300m. During the day, the temperature will increase somewhat and it will only snow above 550m,” explains the Institute.

A situation that will continue all day. “This could already lead to an accumulation of 5 to 10 cm of snow in less than 24 hours, mainly above 400-500 m. At lower altitudes, it will be more like 1 to 5 cm. This evening, it will also rain temporarily on the Ardennes peaks, but in the second half of the night, it will be colder and the rain will give way to snow again. By Tuesday morning, a few more centimeters may accumulate. A little (slush) snow will also become possible down to low altitude over the northeastern half of the country. » Be careful then.

The complete weather forecast

The sky will be very cloudy to overcast Monday morning, with periods of rain in lower and middle Belgium and snowfall in the Ardennes, according to forecasts from the Royal Meteorological Institute.

In the afternoon, the snow will gradually give way to slush and rain. On the highest points of the Ardennes relief, this transition from snow to rain will only take place at the end of the day; snowfall will therefore persist for a good part of the day. An accumulation of 5 to 10 cm of fresh snow could therefore form in the Haute Ardennes.

The maximums will be between 1 and 3°C in the Ardennes, between 5 and 8°C in the center and up to 9 or 10°C by the sea.

During the evening and the first part of the night, the sky will still be very cloudy with occasional rain or showers. In the second part of the night, the rain will turn into snow again in the upper Ardennes and it will freeze. In average Belgium and in the north-east of the country, some slush will also be possible.

The minimums will range from 1 and -3°C degrees in Ardennes and from 0 to 5°C elsewhere. Towards dawn, in the event of clearings, there will also be a risk of ice patches forming on the plains.

When the criteria are met, IRM issues general warnings several times a day for hazardous phenomena related to wind, rain, thunderstorms, slippery conditions, fog, tides, cold and heat. These warnings are issued by Belgian province, for a specific period of validity. They meet the following principles:

Green code: nothing special

> The type of weather forecast does not justify issuing a warning.

Code yellow: be vigilant

> The yellow code can be issued a maximum of 48 hours (and sometimes less depending on uncertainty) before the meteorological phenomenon. The risk of meeting the criteria is more than 65%.

Code orange: be prepared and follow the advice

> Code orange can be issued a maximum of 24 hours (and sometimes less depending on uncertainty) before the meteorological phenomenon. The risk of meeting the criteria is more than 65%. Be prepared and follow the advice given by the relevant authorities.

Code red: take action and follow advice carefully

> The code red can be issued a maximum of 12 hours (and sometimes less depending on uncertainty) before the meteorological phenomenon. The risk of meeting the criteria is more than 65%. Take measures to ensure your safety and that of others, and, if possible, protect your personal property. Strictly follow the advice of the competent authorities.
