For the first time a man has died of monkeypox outside of Africa. He is a 41-year-old Brazilian.

A 41-year-old man died of monkeypox in Brazil. Six people have already died from the disease but this is the first death outside Africa. A man “suffering from monkey pox who was being followed in hospital for other serious clinical conditions died on Thursday,” announced the health secretariat of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais.

The patient died at Eduardo de Menezes Hospital in Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais. According to local media, he had “serious immunity problems”.

Brazil currently has nearly 1,000 cases of monkeypox, according to the Ministry of Health. The first case was detected on June 10, in a man arriving from Europe.

A growing disease

On Saturday July 23, the World Health Organization (WHO) triggered the highest level of alert, the public health emergency of international concern.

For the moment, more than 18,000 cases have been recorded worldwide, outside endemic areas in Africa. 70% of cases are concentrated in Europe.
