Monsalve and the death of a policeman: “We hope that the penalties applied are the maximum allowed by law”

He Undersecretary of the Interior, Manuel Monsalve, remarked that is “it is a painful, sad fact” and delivered his condolences to both the Carabineros and the family of the deceased.

It explained that “as is public knowledge, on March 12 at dawn, within the framework of a police procedure that took place in the city of Concepción, the corporal was first run over, suffering a severe brain injury.” .

“During the course of the morning (this Tuesday), tests were carried out that finally determined the brain death of the corporal first, and therefore his death has been decreed,” he added.

Monsalve stressed that the victim was an organ donor, stating that “it is significant, because it demonstrates human quality.”

The undersecretary transmitted “Our absolute condemnation of the murder of a police officer, and of any act that attacks or puts the life of a police officer at risk. Who was detained and charged until a few hours ago for the crime of frustrated homicide, the detention control was postponed precisely because the quality of the crime has changed.

“We hope, therefore, that the judicial process can determine the maximum sanction established by law, which in this case is prison in its maximum degree, and are sentences that can reach 15 years and one day,” added.

Along these lines, he reiterated that “as a Government, which has sued us in this matter from a judicial point of view, we hope that the penalties applied are the maximum permitted by law.”

The undersecretary explained that in Interior they are considering going to the corporal’s funeral. “We are going to communicate it publicly, surely the Minister of the Interior”, she indicated.

“Remember that the corporal belongs to a sector of the Cañete commune, particularly Huentelolén -as you know I had to (as a deputy) represent the province of Arauco and I lived in Cañete-, and convey our condolences, surely to all the environment that I knew at Cape Salazar ”, he added.

He remarked that “this is an extraordinarily painful event and we reiterate our deep condolences to the family and to the Carabineros de Chile institution.”

Originally from Cañete, Salazar was 37 years old, married and had two children, ages 12 and 7. He had served 15 years in the uniformed institution and was doing his professional practice at the First Police Station of Concepción.
