Monster Energy Tried to Force the Creators of Monster Hunter and Pokemon to Change Their Game Names

Energy drink maker Monster Energy has filed more than a hundred complaints with the Japanese Patent Office over trademark disputes. The old recordings were discovered by Auromaton.

In the past, Monster Energy has filed claims for over 134 trademarks. For example, the company tried to force a name change for three games in the Pokemon series at once: Pokemon X and Y, as well as Sun and Moon. The beverage manufacturer was not satisfied with the logos of the games, which contained stylized images of letters with claw marks. In addition, the North American brand has filed a complaint against the entire Monster Hunter franchise, mobile Monster Strike and other games with the word “monster” mentioned – the energy drink manufacturer reads that buyers may mistakenly believe the company is involved in the creation of games.

This is not the first time Monster Energy has initiated copyright and trademark disputes. The manufacturer has filed more than a thousand lawsuits against companies that use the word monster or just the letter m. In 2020, it was reported that Ubisoft had to rename Gods & Monsters to Immortals Fenyx Rising due to unwillingness to sue Monster Energy. In April 2023, the indie studio creating Dark Deception: Monsters & Mortals received a lawsuit, the developers said they would not change the name due to the company’s demand.
