Montreal family fears social media trend after losing wheel on bridge

A Montreal-area family believes their son’s vehicle wheel detached while driving across the Victoria Bridge due to a dangerous social media trend known as the “lug nut challenge.” Nathan Parker lost a wheel while navigating a curve near the bridge exit, an incident CityNews reported that has sparked fears of intentional vehicle tampering.

The incident occurred around 9:15 p.m. as Nathan Parker was driving from Longueuil toward Montreal. As he navigated the first curve at the exit of the bridge, the wheel came completely off the vehicle. He waited approximately two hours for roadside assistance before a friend arrived with a jack, allowing him to install a spare tire and drive home. The mechanical failure resulted in roughly $8,000 in damages, though no injuries were reported.

The Parker family suspects the vehicle was tampered with while parked at Champlain Mall, where Nathan’s mother leaves the car before commuting via the REM. While the family has not yet requested surveillance footage from the mall, Nathan noted that the parking area provides significant opportunities for someone to loosen components unnoticed. He only became aware of the “lug nut challenge” after discussing the accident with friends, who described a TikTok trend involving the loosening or removal of driver-side lug nuts.

Police track multiple potential tampering cases in 2026

While social media platforms like TikTok state they do not allow content promoting dangerous behavior and redirect searches for the challenge to safety information, the physical reality in Quebec is becoming harder for authorities to ignore. Longueuil police (SPAL) confirmed that as of October 14, 2026, there had been eight potential cases throughout the year linked to this specific challenge.

The Parkers’ concerns follow the death of 37-year-old Justyn Ingram on Highway 15 in Brossard, who was killed when a tire detached from an oncoming vehicle. The connection is personal for the Parkers; John Parker, Nathan’s father, is the brother of Ingram’s father-in-law. The family fears these incidents may be part of the same pattern of social media-driven vandalism.

Reported Metric Data Point
Potential “lug nut challenge” cases in 2026 (as of Oct 14) 8
Estimated damage from Parker vehicle incident $8,000

Despite the growing number of suspicious incidents, police forces across Canada have maintained a cautious stance. While warnings have been issued regarding the trend, no major police agency has directly confirmed a definitive causal link between reported wheel detachments and the social media challenge.

Community response shifts toward vehicle security

The uncertainty has prompted a localized shift in how drivers maintain their vehicles. John Parker noted that acquaintances have begun taking extreme preventative measures, including purchasing multiple sets of lug nuts to “double up” or using lock nuts to secure their wheels against tampering. The family’s attempt to file a police report following the bridge incident was met with a referral to their insurance company rather than a formal criminal investigation.

A woman in Longueuil has also come forward with concerns that her family’s vehicle may have been targeted after her son discovered loosened lug nuts on their car.

John Parker is now urging other motorists to remain hyper-vigilant. He advises that if a driver feels any unusual sensation or noise in their vehicle, they must stop and inspect it immediately rather than delaying a trip to a mechanic. “Did it take this loss on society for them to start doing something? I’m saddened by it, you know?” Parker said.
