News culture Morbius: The director faces criticism and responds

Timidly received by audiences and critics alike, Morbius, the new Spider-Verse movie, still got off to a decent start in theaters with $84 million worldwide after opening weekend.

Interview with a Vampire

Morbius follows the adventures of Michael Morbius, a renowned scientist affected by a blood disease which he wishes to get rid of. During his research, he discovers that the solution to this problem is linked to a species of vampire bats. Of course, the serum test in international waters goes wrong and the scientist finds with the powers and the needs of the animal.

Embodied by Jared LetoMichael Morbius is accompanied by Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Tyrese Gibson, Jared Harris or even Michael Keaton, who takes over the role of Adrian Toomes that he had in Spider-Man Homecoming, creating a connection to the MCU. Touted by some critics as “the worst Marvel movie ahead of Venom: Let There Be Carnage” and featuring a hungry 16% on Rotten Tomatoesthe film nevertheless enjoys effective action scenes and successful special effects which obviously fail to compensate the rest.

A director who is very critical of himself, but who remains proud of his work

Asked by Insider about the critical reception of Morbius, Daniel Espinosa returned to this situation. He does not reject criticism outright, but remains visibly proud of his work in general, and of some sequences specifically :

The first feature I made was a short film called Babylon Disease. I remember one day when I was on the subway and I was a little drunk so I was slightly drunk. Someone nudged me and said “I have to tell you what’s wrong with the second scene of your movie” and I was like “Uh, okay. All that to say that it’s It’s kind of strange to do something so public. Listen, I have a lot of complexes so I criticize my own work a lot. I always try to do better, but I’m also proud of what I do. has passages in all my films of which I am proud.

Daniel Espinosa, to whom we also owe Child 44 and Life: Origin Unknownso accept without any problem the criticisms addressed to Morbiusbut suggests in his remarks to take a step back to highlight the successful elements.

He also said it was important to keep in mind that once a film is released, it no longer belongs to its director but to the public, which presides over the fate of the feature film concerned. Now competing with Sonic 2 and soon by Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s SecretsIt is unlikely that Morbius will remain in theaters for very long.
