The media and journalists who traveled to Los Angeles for the Summer Game Fest 2023 will have had this little privilege, having the opportunity to test a playable demo of Mortal Kombat 1, undoubtedly one of the most beautiful sensations of the event of Geoff Keighley. NetherRealms Studios had indeed planned game sessions of almost an hour to test the new gameplay, but above all to discover this reboot / retro side of the franchise. Only four fighters were made available, namely Liu Kang, Sub-Zero, Kitana and Kenshi, joined by three supporting “kameos” characters Sonya, Jax and Kano. Just press the R1 key to make them appear, either so that they can help us out of a delicate situation by attacking the opponent, or to extend a combo that we are trying to achieve. Obviously, in order to limit abuse, a cooldown system prevents the player from hitting the R1 key, knowing that each intervention is limited.

In terms of game system, Mortal Kombat 1 seems to have made its fights more fluid, with more animations that make the game less rigid than in the past. Some characters like Liu Kang enjoy a range of really new moves compared to previous episodes, even if overall, it’s all the characters that have been revisited. By opting for a reboot (in history), Ed Boon and his teams took malicious pleasure in returning to the origins of the saga, with more classic outfits reminiscent of the good old days of the 90s. costume skins will make our protagonists more contemporary, but this neo-retro aspect does the license a lot of good. Even in the attacks and the famous Fatalities, we find the iconic attacks of the fighters. The gore aspect is obviously still relevant, but we come back to the basics quite often. While waiting for our turn to test the game and propose our own gameplay, here is a gameplay sequence of more than 7 minutes, played by the developers of NetherRealm Studios.

The release of Mortal Kombat 1 is expected for September 19, 2023 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series.
