The Milton Pass left at least 17 dead

The hardest-hit counties, including Hardee, Hillsborough, Charlotte, Manatee, Sarasota and Pinellas, were hit by the hurricane Wednesday night.

Deaths related to Hurricane Milton in Florida have risen to at least 17, several of them caused by tornadoes that occurred before the phenomenon arrived.

According to authorities, several of the victims lost their lives after tornadoes generated by Milton that impacted the region on Wednesday afternoon, touching down in the Spanish Lakes Country Village senior community, located north of Fort Pierce.

The National Weather Service (NWS) this Friday classified the tornado that hit the retirement community as category EF3.

Authorities confirmed that the long-track tornado reached “winds of up to 140-150 miles per hour” (225-240 kilometers per hour), causing damage to businesses and homes in its path.

Early investigations have established that the tornado’s estimated path was at least 12 miles (19 kilometers), although the NWS believes it extended even further.
