Celebrating the bicentenary of founder Carl Moritz Grossmann, independent German watchmaker Moritz Grossmann has expanded its unique Hamatic line with two limited edition references featuring jet black enamel dials, packaged in 41mm rose gold or white gold cases priced at EUR 63,500 before tax, as reported by Monochrome Watches.
Glashütte Heritage Meets the 2018 Hamatic Architecture
Born in Dresden in 1826, Carl Moritz Grossmann established his mechanical workshop in Glashütte after persuasion from his friend Ferdinand Adolph Lange. The master horologist earned global renown for precision pendulum clocks, marine chronometers, and specialized tooling, eventually helping co-found the German School of Watchmaking. Marking the ongoing bicentenary of his birth spanning from 1826 to 1885, the brand has rolled out seven anniversary iterations this year alone. This latest launch serves as the second celebratory edition of the Hamatic, a timepiece originally introduced in 2018.
The core engineering of the Hamatic draws direct inspiration from late 18th-century perpetual winding systems, echoing the hammer and bumper winding mechanisms pioneered by Abraham-Louis Breguet and contemporary watchmakers. Rather than deploying a conventional 360-degree oscillating rotor, the in-house calibre 106.0 utilizes a pendulum-style hammer weight. Fitted with a solid gold mass on its extremity, this hammer swings across a short arc to load the mainspring. According to technical specifications provided by the manufacturer, the fully wound mechanism yields a 72-hour power reserve.
Calibre 106.0 Mechanical Specifications
Behind the display case back, the movement reveals traditional Saxon watchmaking architecture running at 21,600 semi-oscillations per hour. The construction relies on a pillar movement built around an untreated German silver 2/3 plate, enhanced by broad horizontal Glashütte ribbing and double-band snailing on the mainspring barrel.
Usually, when a brand introduces its first automatic watch, it’s nothing to get THAT excited about. Not so with Moritz Grossmann’s Hamatic unveiled in 2019.That’s because the Hamatic is unlike all the other automatics…🔎 Find out more: https://t.co/uiROadAgKD pic.twitter.com/XTxw7gQLLo
The technical architecture of the calibre 106.0 encompasses several distinct components and adjustments:
- Oscillator: Shock-resistant Grossmann balance featuring 4 inertia screws and 2 poising screws, paired with a Nivarox 1 balance spring.
- Regulation: Adjustment executed via a Grossmann micrometer screw positioned on a hand-engraved, cantilevered balance cock bearing the engraved year “1826”.
-
Jewels: Total of 38 jewels, including 3 mounted in screwed gold chatons with pan-head screws.
- Winding System: Automatic winding with an oscillating hammer, bidirectional click wheels, idler with pawl clicks, manual yoke winder, and a separately removable clutch winding mechanism featuring stop seconds for precise hand setting.
- Dimensions: Movement diameter spans 36.4 mm with a height of 5.15 mm, while the three-part 750/000 gold case measures 41.0 mm in diameter and 11.35 mm in height.
Dials Crafted Through Extreme Kiln Firing
While the movement commands mechanical attention on the reverse, the dial side displays the aesthetic tenets of Schönstes deutsches Handwerk—the finest German craftsmanship. To attain the deep lustre and durability of the jet black enamel dial, ground glass mixed with metal oxides undergoes repeated firings in a kiln at extreme temperatures.
Previous iterations of the Hamatic relied on classical Roman numerals. Monochrome Watches notes that these new anniversary editions instead feature applied Arabic numerals crafted from either rose gold or white gold. A peripheral railway-style minutes track frames the dial, accompanied by a slightly recessed small seconds counter situated at the 6 o’clock position. The display is completed by the brand’s signature handmade, polished rose gold or steel hour and minute hands. Grossmann signature mirrors the original 1875 script.
