Moroccan Minister of Industry and Commerce Highlights the Impact of Free Trade Agreements and Consumer Rights Protection

The Minister of Industry and Commerce, Ryad Mezzour, affirmed, Monday in Rabat, that 77% of Morocco’s trade is carried out with countries having concluded free trade agreements (FTA) with the Kingdom.

In response to a question on the results of the FTAs ​​concluded by Morocco, asked by the socialist-opposition Ittihadie group during the weekly session of oral questions in the House of Representatives, Mr. Mezzour stressed that these agreements form a fundamental ecosystem for strengthen national industry.

These FTAs ​​represent the key element that attracts investors, attracted by access to foreign markets thanks to these agreements, he noted.

In addition, the minister noted that the coverage rate of imports by exports stands at 60%, compared to 50% ten years ago, attributing this improvement to investments resulting from free trade agreements.

In response to another question on the operationalization of consumer rights protection mechanisms, asked by the Authenticity and Modernity group, Mr. Mezzour specified that since the beginning of this year, more than 9,000 points of sale have been controlled and 800 infraction tickets were issued. He also indicated that the Executive is working to strengthen consumer rights, through a modern legal arsenal in line with developments, particularly in terms of regulating sales periods and repressing various practices that violate these rights, in light of the emergence of new commercial practices, including e-commerce.

Regarding industrial infrastructure, Mr. Mezzour said that the Kingdom currently has 152 industrial zones with a total area of ​​12,000 hectares, adding that the ministry has worked since the start of the current government mandate, on 27 additional industrial zones of 1,400 hectares.

According to the minister, all regions of the Kingdom will have new generation industrial land to attract new structural industrial projects.

He indicated that his department is working, as part of the development of a new strategy with each of the regions and all regional stakeholders, to establish a partnership engaging both parties and define new regional strategic objectives for industrial land. and social development.
