Morocco won (1-0) Thursday, August 3 against Colombia at Perth Rectangular Stadium and won its place in the round of 16 of the Women’s World Cup, due in particular to Germany’s draw against Korea South (1-1). With six points, Colombia finished first in Group H, tied with second-placed Morocco.

The first half of this Morocco-Colombia was quite poor in real chances, although the Moroccans struck first, like Ibtissam Jraidi, from the first moments of the match. The first real chance for the South Americans came in the 11th minute. Served in the Moroccan penalty area, Marya Ramirez manages to trigger a shot, but not enough to deceive the goalkeeper of the Moroccan team, Khadija Er-Rmichi.

In the minutes that followed, both teams built, turned the ball, tried to find the fault and create chances, but the attempts of both teams were mutually repelled.

Happiness ends up smiling at the Moroccans a few seconds before half-time, in added time. A penalty is awarded to them after a foul by Daniela Arias on Ibtissam Jraidi. Moroccan captain Ghizlane Chebbak shoots, but sees her attempt repelled by Catalina Perez. But Anissa Lahmari followed, and, in a second time, served by Sakina Ouzraoui, pushes the ball into the bottom of the Colombian goals. The Atlas Lionesses lead 1 goal to 0 at halftime.

Second half in favor of Colombia

The Colombians created the first chance of the second half in the 58th minute. After an overflow from Linda Caicedo, this last cross for Daniela Montoya who controls, crosses the shot but Khadija Er-Rmichi extends to repel this attempt and prevent the South Americans from regaining the score. Five minutes later (63rd), it was Marya Ramirez’s turn to strike on goal, but Khadija Er-Rmichi watched, and pushed back again.

The 73rd minute saw a real opportunity for the Colombians to come back. Linda Caicedo sees her attempt diverted by Khadija Er-Rmichi, who makes a reflex save. An offside position is however signaled against the Colombian player. The South Americans created the most chances in this second period, but failed to materialize, like Marya Ramirez (79th) who saw her shot fail on the post.

The Colombians will not be able to come back to the score, and bow against the Lionesses of the Atlas, who win their second victory in the tournament after that against South Korea. The Moroccans reach the round of 16 of the World Cup, and will face Les Bleues on August 8th. Germany, by its draw against South Korea (1-1), finished third in Group H, and was eliminated in the first round, to everyone’s surprise.
