LMorocco will also have its factories for the manufacture of batteries for electric cars. And it is the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region which should house the first of them, which will be built by the Chinese company Gotion High-tech. This is at least what emerges from the memorandum initialed on the sidelines of “Gitex Africa”, by the Minister Delegate in charge of Investment, Convergence and the Evaluation of Public Policies, Mohcine Jazouli, and the President of Gotion High -tech, Li Zhen, in the presence of the head of government, Aziz Akhannouch, and several Moroccan and Chinese officials.

The date of the laying of the first stone nor that of entry into service of the industrial unit have not been given. But it is specified that the mega-factory of electric batteries for cars will be erected in the commune of Bouknadel in Rabat. It will cost 5.9 billion euros (about 65 billion dirhams), will have a production capacity of up to 100 GWh/year by 2030 and should also allow the creation of 25,000 jobs by the same date. The Sino-European group Gotion High-tech, whose reference shareholder is the Volkswagen automotive group, plans to set up an industrial ecosystem for the production of batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage systems in Morocco.

In a statement to the press after the signing ceremony of the memorandum, Li Zhen explained that for the study of its investment project, Gotion High-tech selected Morocco which imposed itself as leader in the automotive industry in Africa. Then, after noting that Morocco has significant potential and wind and solar resources, the president of Gotion High-tech said that his group is in the process of developing an investment project on energy storage solutions. energy, which aims, according to him, to provide green energy to the entire population and to contribute to the decarbonization and economic development of Morocco.

For his part, Mohcine Jazouli highlighted the importance of this memorandum on the establishment of a “giant” factory producing batteries for electric vehicles in Morocco. This is a necessary first step, in view of the signing of an investment agreement, which should allow the launch of a Gigafactory, able to consolidate Morocco’s position as a major player in the automotive industry, he argued.

Morocco chosen for its many assets

Gotion High-tech chose Morocco for its many assets, in particular its asserted positioning as a competitive and low-carbon automotive production platform, but also for its factor endowments, including its lithium and cobalt resources. Indeed, you should know that the mining group Managem has recorded an important invention in the field of lithium-ion type batteries. A technology patented for more than 10 years, which is present in mobile phones and microcomputers, but can also be used in the electric car industry.
