Cancer is a dreaded diagnosis that usually hits those affected suddenly and completely unexpectedly. Which types of cancer are most common among women in Germany.
Like Kate, many women in Germany are also newly diagnosed with cancer. According to cancer registry data, around 230,000 diagnoses are made every year. In principle, the disease can affect anyone. The risk of malignant cell changes increases with age. But younger people are also affected.
These cancers most commonly affect women
Tumors can occur in different areas of the body. The cancer registry of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) records which type of cancer occurs most frequently. As the most recently recorded new case numbers from 2020 show, breast cancer is the most common form among women, followed by colon and lung cancer. Cancers of the uterus or in the form of malignant melanoma of the skin are also among the five most common types of cancer in women.

Breast cancer is the most common, but not the most dangerous type of cancer. If detected and treated early, most diseases are curable.
Cancer risk for certain types changes over the course of life
The statistical risk of developing a particular type of cancer is also determined by age:
- According to the cancer registry, women between the ages of 20 and 29 are most likely to develop skin cancer.
- Breast cancer diagnosis predominates in women over 30. The probability increases further in middle age, i.e. between 45 and around 64, and older women over 65 are also most likely to be affected by breast cancer.
- Cervical cancer is also a more common type of cancer in middle-aged women, but the probability then decreases again purely statistically.
- In older women, in addition to breast cancer, colon and lung cancer are also the most common.
In order to minimize the risk of cancer, regular screening is important. For most types of tumors, the earlier a tumor is detected, the better the chances of treatment.
