Motorola Returns to Wear OS With the Moto Watch Ultra

Motorola is officially returning to Google’s wearable ecosystem with a new flagship device, though the company is bypassing its historic branding to introduce the Moto Watch Ultra. While the original Moto 360 served as an iconic early poster child for Android Wear before Motorola stepped away from the platform, licensing complications kept the famous moniker off this new hardware. Instead, Motorola spent recent years releasing smartwatches powered by a proprietary real-time operating system (RTOS) focused on health tracking and battery longevity at the expense of an open app ecosystem.

The newly revealed Moto Watch Ultra bridges that gap by adopting Google’s platform, priced at $349.99 and scheduled to launch on September 10 according to The Verge.

Hardware Specifications and AI Integration

Under the hood, the $349 device runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 chipset, paired with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage to drive Wear OS 6. The hardware features a 1.5-inch pOLED display housed inside a 46mm stainless steel chassis that measures 12.1mm thick and weighs 51 grams. The circular screen is protected by Gorilla Glass 3 and comes in silver or gunmetal brushed finishes.

For connectivity and daily use, the watch includes:

  • LTE support and NFC for Google Wallet payments
  • IP68 dust resistance and 5ATM water-resistance
  • Dual-band GPS capabilities
  • Support for both Gemini and Motorola’s proprietary Qira AI assistant

Users can swap out the default straps using traditional 22mm spring pins rather than proprietary connectors. Each watch ships with a pair of straps in the box, combining silicone and leather options depending on the chosen colorway.

Battery Life and Fitness Tracking Partnerships

While older RTOS-based models from the manufacturer boasted battery life lasting up to 13 days, the performance demands of a full application ecosystem reduce longevity on the new flagship. Motorola estimates the 550 mAh battery will deliver roughly 50 hours of use, or about two days, with the always-on display switched off. Power replenishment is handled via a magnetic charging dock that connects using USB-C.

For health and wellness monitoring, Motorola partnered with Polar to provide tracking features covering heart rate, sleep, stress, SpO2, recovery, activity goals, intensity zones, inactivity alerts, and breathing exercises, alongside an integrated AI running coach. Despite these comprehensive fitness metrics, reviewers note that the hardware lacks the rugged extreme-sports capabilities found in dedicated outdoor competitors from Apple or Samsung, positioning it closer to standard mainstream smartwatches.

Carrier Availability and Release Timeline

Following its initial unlocked debut on September 10, the wearable will expand to carrier networks starting with a release on Verizon on September 24. Additional major network operators, including T-Mobile, Metro, and AT&T, are slated to offer the smartwatch at a later date. Alongside the watch rollout, Motorola is also introducing a specialized Swarovski edition of its base Razr (2026) smartphone on September 10 for $899, featuring embedded crystals on a dark grey case.
