According to the latest statistics from accident insurance (Suva), in 2020 there were “no fewer than 13,000 mountain bike accidents among active people in Switzerland”, reports Suva on Tuesday, in A press release. This represents a 120% increase over the past ten years. The data show that the average age of victims of this type of accident is over 50 years old.

“This massive increase in the number of accidents is explained in particular by the fact that, during the pandemic, more people started to practice this sport”, continues the Suva. And this trend seems to be continuing. Another explanation: the availability of electric mountain bikes which contributed to the popularity of this sport in the mountains.

“The increase in the number of mountain bikers and the growing popularity of difficult trails lead to an increase in the number of accidents. This is why it is all the more important to adopt a safe behavior and to respect its own limits”, recalls Christoph Müller, expert VTT at the Office of accident prevention (BPA). Because one thing is clear: “Two thirds of accidents occur without any other object or human being being involved”, reveals Suva.

For Christoph Müller, a good physical and mental condition is essential to stay focused throughout the route. “A single second of inattention is sometimes enough to cause a fall with serious consequences,” he concludes.

The Suva recalls that “getting properly equipped can reduce the risk of an accident or, at least, mitigate its consequences”. One element is considered fundamental: the helmet. But the Suva also recommends wearing sports goggles and protective gloves. “Depending on the degree of difficulty of the course, it may be useful to wear additional equipment, such as protection for the knees, elbows and back,” she advises again.
