  • The Tyrol-Pozuzo connection has been strengthened by a circle of friends since 1983

Over 10,000 kilometers as the crow flies separate Tyrol and the Peruvian community of Pozuzo. Nevertheless, the newly established Pozuzo mountain rescue service is unofficially known as the “92nd”. Local office of the Tyrol mountain rescue service. The background to this is the close cooperation between mountain rescue teams across the Atlantic and many thousands of kilometers. This partnership is now being further intensified: the Pozuzo mountain rescue service is receiving new equipment for rescue operations in the Andes. In addition, the Peruvian mountain rescuers can take advantage of the training and further education opportunities offered by the Tyrol Mountain Rescue Service. This week, State Security Councilor Astrid Mair, together with the state manager of the Tyrol mountain rescue service, Hermann Spiegl, welcomed Bianca Köhel, representative of the municipality of Pozuzo, and Emanuel Bachnetzer, chairman of the Freundeskreis Pozuzo association, to the country house in Innsbruck to officially hand over the new equipment.

Partnership for more safety in the mountains

The close partnership between the Tyrol mountain rescue service and the mountain rescue service in Pozuzo has existed since 2022. As part of the cooperation, technical equipment for emergencies has already been handed over to Peru. Two Pozucinos also took part in mountain rescue training in Tyrol. The Peruvian mountain rescuers are now being provided with additional equipment and clothing for operations. This is financed by the state of Tyrol.

“Tyrol and Pozuzo are more similar than you think: This is not only due to the many high mountains, but also the culture. For over 150 years, when Tyroleans emigrated to the Peruvian community, Tyrolean culture has been lived in Pozuzo and contact with the homeland has been maintained. With the now intensified partnership between the mountain rescue services, we are further strengthening this bond and supporting our Peruvian friends in enabling greater safety in the mountains,” explains LRin Mair.

“92. Local office” receives access to online knowledge tools

The missions to which the six-man team in Pozuzo are mainly called are rescue and search operations. The dislocations are also increasing there due to the increase in tourists. Thanks to the new partnership with the Tyrolean mountain rescue service, the additional challenges can be better mastered. “We decided to present the mountain rescue in Pozuzo as a fictional ’92. Local office’ and to give the comrades in Pozuzo access to our online knowledge tool with documents, instructional videos, knowledge tests and course content. This means that the Peruvian mountain rescuers are constantly informed about the latest developments in Tyrol, Austria and Europe regarding techniques, deployment strategies, medical procedures and the like,” explains the country manager of the Tyrol Mountain Rescue Hermann Spiegl and continues: “It’s just good for us to be there, where we can help to help. It’s also nice that the relationships go beyond the rescue work and even become friends.” This also pleases the commander of the Pozuzo mountain rescue, Anibal Trujillo: “The partnership with the Tyrolean mountain rescue gave us a big boost in motivation and offers a professional basis for them Expansion of our task force. Our aim is to train young people who can support and strengthen our group in the coming years.”

About the Tyrol-Pozuzo connection

In 1857, 180 Tyroleans and 120 Rhinelanders emigrated to Peru to found the self-proclaimed “only Austro-German colony in the world” on the edge of the Amazon rainforest. In 1868 another wave of emigration from Tyrol and Bavaria followed. The Tyrolean language pearl of Pozuzo remained difficult to reach until the middle of the 20th century. This allowed the unique culture and language to be preserved to the present day. Today 9,400 people live in the community. The centuries-old traditions are still lived and a close connection to the old homeland is maintained.

Silz-Haiming-Pozuzo

Since 1983, a close exchange has been maintained between the partner communities of Silz, Haiming and Pozuzo as part of the Friends of Pozuzo. The circle of friends under chairman Emanuel Bachnetzer works together with Pozuzo to implement a wide variety of projects on site. “In Pozuzo, we have implemented, among other things, a German teaching project, a project to preserve building culture and the design of our own hiking trails. With the mountain rescue partnership, we have added a new level from which both sides, both in Peru and Tyrol, can benefit and new friendships and contacts can be created,” says Bachnetzer, who explains: “We are currently working on other projects, such as the founding of an academy for language and music, a music band and the support of community service workers in Pozuzo.” The projects are financially supported by the state of Tyrol.
