Results showed that all soft contact lenses tested contained PFAS, with levels of organic fluorine detected ranging from 105 parts per million (ppm) to 20,700 ppm. That is, all contact lenses tested exceeded 100 ppm, which is equivalent to 100,000,000 ppt, or 50,000 times the maximum level certified safe for drinking water by the EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency).

The research mainly focused on testing contact lenses of three major brands, including Acuvue, Alcon and Coopervision, and the results were all found to contain PFAS. Among them, the three contact lenses with the highest organic fluorine content are Alcon Air Optix Colors (20,700ppm) with Smartshield technology, Alcon Total 30 daily wear (20,400ppm) and Alcon Air OPTIX (without Hydraglide) for astigmatism (20,000ppm) ) contact lenses. The test samples with the lowest organic fluorine content are Acuvue Oasys with Hydraclear Plus (105ppm) for astigmatism and Alcon Dailies TOTAL 1 One-Day Contact Lenses Water Gradient (106ppm) for astigmatism.

PFAS cannot be broken down
