Many people choose to wear contact lenses for convenience. However, a recent study in the United States found that 18 types of soft contact lenses all contain the “permanent chemical” PFAS (a type of organic fluorine), and long-term intake may increase the risk of cancer. Among them, the contact lenses of the three famous brands Acuvue, Alcon and Coopervision were found to contain PFAS.

According to foreign media reports, the consumer information platform “Mamavation“Recently, in a joint study with “Environmental Health News”, 18 samples of soft contact lenses were sent to a laboratory approved by the US Environmental Protection Agency for testing to test their PFAS content.

Results showed that all soft contact lenses tested contained PFAS, with levels of organic fluorine detected ranging from 105 parts per million (ppm) to 20,700 ppm. That is, all contact lenses tested exceeded 100 ppm, which is equivalent to 100,000,000 ppt, or 50,000 times the maximum level certified safe for drinking water by the EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency).

The research mainly focused on testing contact lenses of three major brands, including Acuvue, Alcon and Coopervision, and the results were all found to contain PFAS. Among them, the three contact lenses with the highest organic fluorine content are Alcon Air Optix Colors (20,700ppm) with Smartshield technology, Alcon Total 30 daily wear (20,400ppm) and Alcon Air OPTIX (without Hydraglide) for astigmatism (20,000ppm) ) contact lenses. The test samples with the lowest organic fluorine content are Acuvue Oasys with Hydraclear Plus (105ppm) for astigmatism and Alcon Dailies TOTAL 1 One-Day Contact Lenses Water Gradient (106ppm) for astigmatism.

PFAS cannot be broken down

A new study in the United States earlier found that PFAS (polyfluoroalkyl substances) are chemical substances that cannot be decomposed by the environment. After they enter the body, it takes nearly 10 years to be decomposed. They are also called “permanent chemicals.” , harmful to human body and environment. For example, long-term intake may cause cancer, thyroid disease, liver damage, fertility decline and endocrine interference.

According to the American Chemical Society, contact lenses are primarily made of polymethyl methacrylate, silicone, and fluorocarbon coatings (usually PFAS). From the test results, it can be known that contact lens manufacturers may add different amounts of organic fluorine to contact lenses for different functions, so that the organic fluorine content exceeds the normal level.

Pregnant women consuming PFAS increases fetal autism risk

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has pointed out that PFAS in cosmetics and skin care products are usually purposefully added to regulate, smooth or make the skin look shiny, etc. Used to adjust the consistency and texture of the product. Legally, all ingredients should be listed on product labels, but the PFAS contained in some products may come from impurities in raw materials, and were not intentionally added to cosmetics.

Previous studies have pointed out the risks of PFAS to health, especially pregnant women, such as fetal exposure to PFAS in utero increases the risk of autism, kidney cancer, testicular cancer, ovarian cancer, prostate cancer, thyroid cancer and There is a higher risk of bone marrow cancer. An Australian study found that as long as there is a 5 cm crack on the easy-clean wok, whether it is formed by a spatula or a spoon, as many as 9,100 plastic particles can be released, which will seep into the food during cooking, posing a huge risk .

An early study in the United States observed about 10,000 people’s blood samples from 2003 to 2014, and found 5 common PFAS in 70% of the samples. At the same time, it was found that the concentration of PFAS in the participants’ body would increase within 24 hours after eating fast food, which is believed to be due to The food is stained with PFAS contained in the coating of take-out wrapping paper or plastic boxes.
