Thrissur: Husband and mother-in-law have been arrested in a case where a newlywed was found dead under mysterious circumstances in the bathroom of her husband’s house on the 14th day after marriage. The crime branch team arrested Peringottukara Karuveli Arun (36) and his mother Draupadi (62). They were produced before the Iringalakuda Magistrate’s Court and remanded.
Shruti’s family had approached the high court to protest the non – progress of the case despite two and a half years of investigation by the police and later the crime branch. They were arrested after the court sent a notice to the Crime Branch on a petition seeking a CBI probe. They were charged under section 304 (b) of the IPC for death following dowry abuse. This is an offense punishable by up to 7 years imprisonment.
Shruthi (26), daughter of Subramanian and Sridevi, was found dead on January 6, 2020 at Nariyampully, Mullassery. The couple claimed to have collapsed and died in the bathroom. However, the state crime branch took over the investigation after Shruti’s family members complained that Arun was mentally abusing Shruti and demanding more dowry. The medical board’s report found that Shruti’s death was due to suffocation.
