Last Tuesday (17), the number of cases of acute childhood hepatitis – still of unknown origin – rose to 429, 81 cases more than a week ago, according to the WHO (World Health Organization). According to the agency, six patients died and 26 required liver transplants.
The cases took place in 22 countries and most were in Europe. Additionally, only 12 – including the US, Spain, Israel and the UK – had more than five cases. The WHO has warned that another 40 cases are awaiting confirmation.
The entity revealed that three out of four affected children are under the age of 5, in addition to this 15% of patients needed care in intensive care units.

Reported by the UK to the WHO, the first ten cases of acute mysterious hepatitis were reported in previously healthy children under the age of 10. It is suspected that the cases might be linked to an adenovirus.
