Several Russian fighter jets and helicopters crashed near the Ukrainian border in the Bryansk region on Saturday. Ukraine blamed Russia’s own anti-aircraft defenses, Russia blamed Kiev.
Now the head of the private Russian mercenary group Wagner, Yevgeny Prigoshin, speaks up. He claimed that the downed military planes could possibly have been shot down by the Russian forces themselves. In other words, Ukraine could be right.
The state news agency Tass reported, citing unspecified emergency services, that the Su-34 and a helicopter had crashed. Other sources, including Vladimir Rogov, the head of a Russian organization of collaborators in Ukraine’s Zaporizhia district, said four aircraft went down. All are said to have belonged to the same unit.

A spokesman for the Ukrainian Air Force, Yuri Ihnat, said on Sunday that Ukraine had nothing to do with it. On Ukrainian television, he suggested that Russia itself could be responsible for the crashes. In addition, not two, but three helicopters and two fighter jets were shot down. The Russian air defense is responsible for it.
Ihnat later backed down and said he was joking.
Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin, however, expressed a similar hypothesis. “Four planes – if you draw a circle around the places of their crash, it turns out that this circle has a diameter (and they all lie exactly in a circle) of 40 kilometers. … Now go to the Internet and look up which ones Some kind of anti-aircraft weapon could be in the middle of this circle, and then make up your own versions,” Prigozhin told Telegram.
Prigozhin made it clear that he had no insider knowledge.
In the past he has repeatedly criticized the Russian military for its strategy in Ukraine.
