The fire at the Bluff Hill residence was reported shortly before 8:00 PM, according to initial reports. Neighbor Claire Mackintosh described the scene as “scary” and “shocking,” stating, “We did not realise at first, we came out when it was blazing.” She added that residents nearby could feel the heat radiating from the burning structure. Mataruahou (Bluff Hill) Walk, a 4.4km route, begins near the Ocean Spa pool complex and offers views of Hawke Bay. The area is also home to Karetoki Whare (Sturm’s Gully) Reserve, located near the site of the fire. The domain’s history includes a World War II coastal defence gun emplacement, now incorporated into the Mataruahou (Bluff Hill) Lookout.
