As NASA prepares for the post-ISS era, Johnson Space Center’s Building 9 has transformed into a proving ground where commercial space station mockups, including Starlab alongside hardware from SpaceX and Blue Origin, now occupy the training floor. This transition reshapes astronaut training as the International Space Station nears its 2030 retirement.
Re-engineering Low Earth Orbit Infrastructure
For over two decades, the International Space Station has functioned as the singular focal point for microgravity research, long-duration spaceflight operations, and international cooperation. This upcoming orbital void forces a fundamental restructuring of how space agencies access low Earth orbit. Instead of constructing and operating a singular, state-funded replacement facility, NASA and international partners are pivoting toward a market-driven procurement model.
Under the Commercial LEO Destinations program, NASA is positioning itself as a corporate anchor tenant rather than an infrastructure owner. Private aerospace entities are tasked with designing, validating, and operating commercial space stations. Universities, private corporations, and government agencies will subsequently purchase dedicated crew time and laboratory access on these privately held platforms. This architecture disperses capital expenditures across multiple commercial operators, mitigating single-point-of-failure risks for institutional budgets.
Evolving the Training Floor at Johnson Space Center
The operational shift is already physically manifesting on Earth. Inside Building 9 at the Johnson Space Center, multi-floor engineering mockups of commercial habitats sit alongside legacy training systems. Starlab, developed by Voyager Space and its partners, shares physical training space with hardware prototypes engineered by SpaceX and Blue Origin.
These commercial hubs are engineered to serve diverse commercial markets simultaneously, ranging from microgravity pharmaceutical manufacturing to private orbital tourism.
The Transition Timeline and Commercial Milestones
Axiom Space represents an intermediate phase in this operational migration. Axiom Station is designed to initially launch and attach its habitation modules directly to the operational ISS. This staged integration allows engineers and flight crews to build out operational heritage and hardware reliability while the government-owned lab remains active. Eventually, these modules will physically detach, forming a free-flying independent commercial space station before the ISS is finally deorbited.

By overlapping the operational lifespans of the ISS and its commercial successors, NASA aims to eliminate any potential capability gap in human-tended orbital infrastructure.
