NASA announced the approach to Earth of a “potentially dangerous” asteroid – RBK

Asteroid 7482 (1994 PC1) will approach Earth as close as possible on January 18, reported Planetary Defense Coordination Office on Twitter.

Its average diameter is about 1,052 m, the closest distance to Earth will be 1.98 million km, the agency said. According to classification NASA, the asteroid is classified as a “potentially dangerous” object, but the agency assuredthat it will not pose any threat to the planet for at least the next hundred years.

The future approach of the asteroid with the Earth will be maximum since the beginning of 1933, when, according to NASA calculations, it was less than 1.1 thousand km from the planet, transfers CBS. NASA also reported that the asteroid will again fly past Earth in July this year at a much greater distance. The next time it will approach the planet, according to the agency’s forecasts, only on January 18, 2105, when it flies at a distance of 2.3 thousand km.
