NASA Fails Mission to Save Neil Gehrels Swift Telescope

NASA has announced the failure of a pioneering $30 million space rescue mission launched on July 3 from a Pacific atoll, which aimed to save the aging Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory by utilizing a robotic spacecraft to boost its decaying orbit and prevent its destruction in Earth’s atmosphere.

The Anatomy of a High-Stakes Orbital Rescue

Launched to preserve an asset that originally cost $250 million, the ambitious project targeted the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, a triple telescope launched in 2004 to study high-energy, brief gamma-ray bursts. Active for more than two decades, the observatory remained in high demand among the scientific community. However, it was progressively losing altitude and faced the existential threat of re-entering Earth’s atmosphere and burning up, according to reporting from sources like DHnet and SudOuest.

The operational blueprint was exceptionally complex. Following a launch into an orbit close to Swift’s trajectory, a robotic vehicle built by the American startup Katalyst was tasked with locating the telescope in the expanse of space. Once found, the robot needed to maneuver around the satellite and secure it using three mobile robotic arms. The recovery vehicle was then designed to provide continuous propulsion for at least a month, lifting Swift approximately 300 kilometers higher back toward its original operating altitude, as noted by NASA’s mission parameters.

Altitude Control Failures Derail Katalyst Robot

The mission hit a wall due to persistent technical hurdles. According to SudOuest, the mission faltered because of a persistent altitude control problem on the startup’s robotic craft. Consequently, the vehicle will neither capture nor push the telescope to a higher orbit as initially planned.

Despite the setback, recovery efforts have pivoted toward data collection. The rescue robot will still attempt to draw near the observatory to gather a maximum amount of telemetry and operational data, as confirmed by Katalyst. The company had already signaled operational difficulties encountered by the spacecraft toward the end of July.

Agency Response and the Future of Orbital Servicing

NASA acknowledged that the maneuvers attempted during the flight had never been executed before in space. While the outcome fell short of expectations, leadership maintained that the attempt was fundamentally sound.

“This is not the result we were aiming for, but it does not call into question the reasons why this mission was worth trying,” NASA chief Jared Isaacman stated in an official release, pledging that the agency would extract the maximum possible lessons from the experience.
