“NASA’s CREX-2 Sounding Rocket Successfully Launches to Study Earth’s Mysterious Polar Rim”

2023-04-29 12:24:02

Update December 1, 2021 – The CREX-2 payload successfully launched at 3:25 AM EDT from the Andøya Space Center in Norway. The four-stage Oryol IV sounding rocket carried the payload to a peak of 392 miles. Initial reports indicate that the flight was a success and the ampoules carrying the vapors operated as planned. Good data were received including data from the steam imaging team.

The importance of the magnetic field

Strange things happen in Atmosphere Earth at high latitudes. In the local noon, when you are the sun At its highest point, it passes a funnel-shaped hole in our planet’s magnetic field across the sky.

Earth’s magnetic field protects us from the solar wind, the stream of charged particles emitted from the sun. The gap in this area, called the polar rim, allows the solar wind a direct line of access to Earth’s atmosphere.

Radio and GPS signals behave strangely when they travel across this part of the sky. In the past 20 years, scientists and spacecraft operators have noticed something else unusual as spacecraft pass through this region: it’s slowing down!

said Mark Cundy, a physicist at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and principal investigator of NASA’s Cusp Region Experiment, or CREX-2, sounding rocket mission. That’s because the air at the edge is noticeably denser than air elsewhere in spacecraft orbits around Earth.

But no one knows why or how. By understanding the forces acting on the extremum, scientists hope to better anticipate changes in spacecraft trajectories. The launch window for CREX-2, which lifts off from Andenes, Norway, opens at 4 am EST (10 am CET) on December 1, 2021.
