NASA’s Curiosity rover discovered a “duck” on Mars

For ten years, the NASA’s Curiosity Rover tour Marte looking for signs of past life, but also captures impressive images of the red planet. Over time, the game of pareidolia took hold, a human tendency to detect familiar aspects in inanimate forms such as the “faces” that can be seen in a plug.

In this opportunity, the rover Spaceman found an adorable rock in the shape of a duckwhich is added to other findings of this type such as a fish, a cat, a portion of spaghetti and even a secret door.

This new image was captured on October 22 and Andrea Luck recently popularized it on social media. In the photos you can see the rock with a protruding protuberance that resembles a beak, on top of a plump shape that could be the body of the bird.

Science on Mars and Animal Rocks

The Curiosity rover is currently exploring Mount Sharp, a mountain that forms a central peak in the middle of Gale Crater. According to a blog from the NASAscientists believe that this region was home to streams and ponds on Mars billions of years ago that, after drying, left behind minerals and mud deposits.

Those areas, IFL Science explains, became layers of stone, eroded over billions of years by the planet’s winds and dust storms, resulting in peculiar geological features, like this time, in the form of duck.

On another occasion, China’s Yutu 2 rover found an old “moon cube” and an “alien hut” that ultimately turned out to be just rocks.

Curiosity spent 3,647 sols – Martian days – in the planet red and continues to work perfectly.
