Three children and three adults were killed in a shooting at Covenant Elementary School in Nashville, Tennessee, on Monday. The adult victims are school employees.

The shooter is a 28-year-old woman from Nashville, according to police. She is said to have walked into primary school with at least two automatic rifles and a pistol.

The woman has not yet been identified by name. The police have not given a possible motive for the shooting, nor established a connection between the woman and the school. The authorities had previously announced that the perpetrator was a “teenage” woman.

“First we took out those who still had a chance”

The fire brigade responded with several units. “Our teams tried to get those who still had signs of life out of the building. Those who still had a chance to be rescued,” firefighter Kendra Loney told CNN. On a normal school day, 200 children and 40 to 50 teachers are in the school.

Shortly after the shooter was shot, the security forces set up a meeting place for children and parents in front of the school building. “Mental health specialists and professionals” were present there, Loney explained.

The shooter was on the second floor

According to the information, the police were alerted at 10:13 a.m. local time because of a gun attack in the Christian private school. Police officers began clearing the ground floor of the building and then heard gunfire from the first floor, police spokesman Don Aaron said.

There the police found the attacker and shot her. According to the police spokesman, the attacker was shot by two police officers.

Reactions from the White House

After the attack, the White House urgently called for gun laws to be tightened. First Lady Jill Biden said, “I’m really at a loss for words. Our children deserve better.” “How many more children have to be murdered before congressional Republicans stand up and act?” said US government spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre. The US Parliament urgently needs to ban assault rifles and close loopholes in background checks for gun buyers.

“Enough is enough,” warned Jean-Pierre. “We must do more.” Joe Biden has done more than any other President to tackle gun violence in the country. But now Congress must act urgently. “Our children should be able to feel safe and secure at school,” said Jean-Pierre. Attacks like those in Nashville are “devastating” and “heartbreaking”.

Fatal gun attacks are a regular occurrence in the United States. Schools are also often affected. Last May, an 18-year-old shot dead 19 children and two teachers at an elementary school in the small Texas town of Uvalde.
