The vice dean of the Medical College of Peru (CMP), Ciro Maguiña, considered that the estimate of 7 million people infected with the coronavirus (COVID-19) in Peru “it would not be real”, so he asked “to be prudent with the figures.”
On Channel N, he warned that talking about a figure of such magnitude could give “False security” and the guard would be raised more, something that he described as “very dangerous” as long as there are no more truthful figures and these are verified with other studies.
“We must be careful with the figures because rapid tests are being projected on the basis of which they have served poorly, but it is not a great panacea either because we clinicians have seen that there are false positives and false negatives. That is in several studies in Peru “, he stated.
“That over-registration in my opinion would not be real because although we are well infected, but not to the extent that Loreto has had. There it is explainable because everything failed, the State, the population never collaborated, etc. “he added.
As recalled, both César Cárcamo, a member of the prospective group of the Ministry of Health (Minsa), and the vice minister of Public Health, Luis Suárez, maintained that the number of cases of COVID-19 it would have reached 7 million in the country.
Regarding the high number of deaths reported in our country, Maguiña said that it is due to COVID-19 and the so-called “Forgotten diseases”, that is, people who have died at home due to cancer, diabetes, hypertension, etc.
“That has happened in the United States, where a study says that the cause of death was in some cases COVID, [pero] the root cause was these forgotten diseases and that explains the issue of high death toll or underreporting “, he indicated.
“This is the accumulated amount because the dead do not die weekly, they die depending on the severity and complications that ICU patients present as well as those who do not attend because there are no control programs in these months”added.
Finally, Ciro Maguiña questioned the assertions of the former Minister of Health Víctor Zamora, who indicated that he hopes that the authorities and specialists will remove hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin from the list of drugs that are supplied to patients infected with coronavirus.
“We do not owe ourselves to anyone, simply to what is the reality of the day to day. Even Zamora has left, a failed minister who is now an opinionologist. He who failed with the tests, who said that the rapid ones were the same with the molecular ones, today also says that the medicines must be withdrawn “, he sentenced.
