Austria takes a point from the world champion
Under the new national coach Ralf Rangnick, Austria is again delivering significantly better results – now also against world champions France.

World champion France is still stuck in the Nations League. The French are still waiting for their first win after the third matchday. In Austria, France saved a point late in the 1-1 draw.
And in Austria, under Ralf Rangnick, who took over the team from Franco Foda (new FC Zurich), there is already something like euphoria. Neither under Foda nor under his predecessor Marcel Koller did Austria ever win against a team that was ranked ahead of Austria in the FIFA world rankings. Under Rangnick, the Austrians celebrated an away win against Croatia (3-0) and now almost a complete success over world champions France.
Ösis narrowly missed a late goal
In the end, the sensation against France was less than ten minutes away. Kylian Mbappé equalized in the 83rd minute to make it 1-1. In the 87th minute, Mbappé even had a great chance to make it 2-1 for France. On the other hand, Austria made it possible to equalize with a counterattack in the finish.
Austria did not defy any French B team in Vienna. Karim Benzema, Kingsley Coman, Antoine Griezmann, Boubacar Kamara and goalie Hugo Lloris were in the starting lineup; Kylian Mbappé and Christopher Nkunku came on as substitutes. Mbappé in particular then proved to be far too quick and agile for Austria’s back line, which had to do without David Alaba for the last 20 minutes.
Bristol City striker Andreas Weimann gave Austria the lead in the 37th minute. 30-year-old Weimann scored for the national team for the first time.
France worried about staying in League A
Like Switzerland, the French are threatened with relegation from Nations League A. With just two points, the world champion is two points behind Croatia (1-0 in Denmark) and Austria at half-time in last place.
In League D, Liechtenstein suffered their ninth international defeat in a row in Andorra. In contrast to the first eight defeats, the team from the principality managed one goal in Andorra. In the 93rd minute, just before the final whistle, 24-year-old Livio Meier scored the first Liechtenstein international goal since Noah Frick (FC Gossau) made it 1-1 on September 8, 2021. (cat/SDA)
