Nationwide Building Society has provided approximately £60 million in loans earmarked for home improvements aimed at increasing energy efficiency, according to figures released this week. The loans, offered at 0% interest, have been primarily used for the installation of solar panels, insulation upgrades and the replacement of windows. The South West region of England has demonstrated the highest uptake of the scheme, accounting for 16% of all completed green borrowing cases. The Outer Metropolitan and Outer South East regions followed, each representing 12% of completions. The financial support comes as scrutiny intensifies regarding the carbon footprint of UK housing. A report cited by Nationwide, conducted in collaboration with WPI Economics, suggests that upgrading all residential properties in England to an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of band ‘C’ or above could reduce emissions from the housing stock by as much as 47%. Industry body NAEA Propertymark welcomed the initiative but emphasized the need for broader access to green financing. “Initiatives like this that support retrofitting not only help homeowners reduce their energy bills and carbon emissions, but similarly play a crucial role in improving the overall sustainability of the UK’s ageing housing stock,” said president Mary-Lou Press. “Yet, while this pilot is a positive step, broader and more accessible green financing solutions are needed across the market so that more property owners can benefit. To truly unlock retrofit opportunities at scale, governments across the UK, lenders, and the property industry must operate together to ensure that support, supply-chain capacity and consumer awareness keep pace with net-zero ambitions.” Nationwide is also involved in the Green Home Finance Strategic Partnership, a government-led initiative established under the Warm Homes Plan and overseen by the Green Finance Institute. The partnership aims to foster the development of mainstream green home finance options and facilitate large-scale retrofitting projects, bringing together lenders, energy sector representatives, and consumer advocacy groups. Several companies offer solar panel installation services nationwide, including Solar South West and Nationwide Solar Power. Nationwide Sun focuses on environmental contracting and solar energy solutions.
