TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — The oceanic island nation of Nauru announced Monday that it would stop giving diplomatic recognition to Taiwan in favor of China. The decision left Taiwan with 12 diplomatic allies around the world.

Taiwan now has official ties with 11 countries and the Vatican. Seven of them are in Latin America and the Caribbean, three on islands in the Pacific Ocean and one in Africa.
