Navanethem "Navi" Pillay, an 85-year-old South African human rights champion and former International Criminal Court judge, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for her work promoting peace and international law. The honor coincides with the 125th anniversary of the peace prize CBS News. Jørgen Watne Frydnes, chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, noted from the podium that the committee had been unable to reach Pillay to tell her she had been awarded the prize, saying that if she was watching, and saw a call coming in from a Norwegian phone number, "please pick up." Pillay, whose family is of Indian Tamil origin and who grew up during apartheid in Durban, South Africa, has held judicial roles on the International Criminal Court, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, and South Africa’s High Court. She served as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014.
Accountability Under International Law
In its official announcement, the Norwegian Nobel Committee underscored Pillay’s commitment to the rule of law. Navi Pillay has held states and national leaders accountable and brought hope to victims of violence and conflict,
the committee stated. In all the positions she has held, she has stressed the responsibility of individuals and states to comply with the rule of law.
Frydnes said the committee recognized her efforts to promote peace and international law.
