Navigating the Chaos: The Ongoing Studio Closures and Restructuring in the Gaming Industry

Most recently, we’ve seen the closure of Volition, as well as layoffs at Crystal Dynamics, the studio behind the Perfect Dark reboot and Tomb Raider. The period of studio closures and people losing their jobs doesn’t seem to be over yet, though. At Embracer’s annual shareholder meeting, CEO Lars Wingefors spoke about the restructuring and said it was an ongoing process. He said: “Obviously it’s tough from many perspectives but we’re determined to make it happen. We want to find new opportunities for our employees, even if it might be outside of Embracer Group. Sometimes it’s divestment or we’re working with Partners are working together to fund some projects. But ultimately we are making decisions to reorganize or downsize some teams, and there will be some closures. We are confident that we will achieve the goals we set by the end of this fiscal year. There are also some Embracer assets, Like Gearbox, there may be interest from other parties. Wingefors seems to have mostly avoided the topic without disclosing anything. “There is a strong, vibrant market with many active players – including financial sponsors and Large industry players,” he said. “But I would say it’s easier to run the appropriate processes on more high-value assets than on smaller assets. Hopefully too many people won’t be affected by this process, as we’ve seen a ton of layoffs this year across gaming, film, and TV.
