HAMPTON, Va. – The 16th-ranked Navy wrestling team (6-2) fell to 19th-ranked Oklahoma (5-3), 24-11, and 11th-ranked South Dakota State (6-2), 30-13, at the 43rd annual Virginia Duals on Friday afternoon at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Va.
The Sooners claimed victories in seven of the 10 bouts (125, 133, 149, 157, 184, 197, 285) and won three matches in overtime to hand the Mids their first loss of the season.
The Jackrabbits earned bonus points in five of their seven wins (125, 133, 149, 157, 197) to hand Navy its second defeat of the day.

Conrad Hendriksen gave the Sooners a 5-0 lead with an 18-2 (6:57) technical fall against Grant Treaster (125). Hendriksen scored a takedown in the first and second periods to gain a 6-0 cushion. He scored 11 points in the final two minutes from two takedowns, a four-point near fall and a stall violation to secure the victory by technical fall. Hendriksen also was awarded the riding time point.
Riding time played a huge role in the 133-pound bout between Jace Koelzer and No. 27 Brendan Ferretti. Both wrestlers scored an escape in the match, but Koelzer secured the riding time point to win by a 2-1 decision. Koelzer’s victory extended Oklahoma’s lead to 8-0.
The Mids quickly got back into the dual thanks to a win by fall from No. 20 Josh Koderhandt against KJ Evans. Koderhandt jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the opening period after scoring a takedown and a four-point near fall. He then pinned Evans at the 2:22 mark to make the score, 8-6.
Kaemen Smith (149) saw his first dual action of the season against No. 30 Willie McDougald in the next match. McDougald struck in the first period with a takedown to take a 3-0 lead. He started the scoring in the second period with an escape and then recorded another takedown to go ahead, 7-0. Smith scored his first point with an escape to make the score, 7-1, through five minutes. Smith added his second escape in the third period, but McDougald answered with a takedown to gain a 10-2 advantage. McDougald won the match by a 12-5 decision to give the Sooners an 11-6 cushion.
Jonathan Ley (157) and No. 33 Jared Hill both recorded an escape in regulation to send their match into overtime tied, 1-1. Hill scored the match-winning takedown in sudden victory to win by a 4-1 decision. Navy was also deducted a point toward their team score for unsportsmanlike conduct, giving Oklahoma a 14-5 advantage.
The Mids decreased their deficit to just two points thanks to back-to-back shutout wins from No. 21 Andrew Cerniglia (165) and No. 26 Danny Wask (174).
Cerniglia grabbed a 5-0 lead in the first period against No. 29 Cael Carlson by scoring a takedown and a two-point near fall. Cerniglia added another two points from an escape and riding time to win by a 7-0 decision.
Wask and No. 29 Tate Picklo went into the third period tied, 0-0. Wask put the first point on the scoreboard with an escape and then scored a takedown to gain a 4-0 advantage. Wask held Picklo scoreless for the remainder of the match and secured the riding time point to win by a 5-0 decision.
Giuseppe Hoose flipped the momentum back to the Sooners with a win in sudden victory against No. 33 David Key. Key opened the scoring in the second period with a reversal to go ahead, 2-0. Hoose scored his first point after Key was called for stalling for the second time in the match. Hoose then took a 4-2 lead with a takedown. Key forced overtime by scoring an escape and earning the riding time point to make the score, 4-4. Hoose claimed the victory with a takedown to win by a 7-4 decision in sudden victory.
Second-ranked Stephen Buchanan put Oklahoma in front, 21-11, and clinched the dual with a 14-5 major decision against Cael Crebs (197).
The Sooners added another three points to their team score after No. 14 Josh Heindselman defeated No. 18 Grady Griess (285) by a 4-1 decision in sudden victory.

Navy was quickly in a 10-0 hole through two matches against South Dakota State.
Seventeenth-ranked Tanner Jordan defeated Hayden Benter (125) by fall (4:06) to earn the Jackrabbits six points.
Fifteenth-ranked Derrick Cardinal followed up with a 14-1 major decision against Garrett Totten (133).
Koderhandt once again scored the first points for the Mids in his victory over No. 22 Clay Carlson. Carlson held a 1-0 advantage entering the third period, but an escape by Koderhandt evened the match at 1-1. Carlson was called for stalling twice over the remainder of the match, which awarded Koderhandt two points to help him win by a 3-1 decision.
South Dakota State responded with two commanding victories to increase its lead to 19-3. Twentieth-ranked Alex Martin scored five points in the third period to win by major decision (8-0) over Nicholas Vafiadis (149). Seventeenth-ranked Cael Swensen struck for six takedowns against Charlie Evans (157) to win by a 20-4 (6:07) technical fall.
Cerniglia won his second match of the day by a 10-2 major decision against Tanner Cook. Cerniglia recorded two takedowns in the first three minutes to take a 6-1 lead. He added another four points in the second period with an escape and his third takedown. His victory made the score, 19-7.
The Jackrabbits won by decision at 174 and 184 pounds to secure the win.
Fifth-ranked Cade DeVos defeated Wask by a 5-0 decision.
Key trailed No. 14 Bennett Berge, 6-2, in the first period, but scored a takedown to decrease his deficit to, 6-5, after three minutes of action. Key tied the match with an escape in the third, but Berge answered with his third takedown to win by a 9-6 decision.
Crebs then faced his second wrestler ranked in the top 10, No. 6 Tanner Sloan. Sloan won the match by an 18-0 (3:24) technical fall to put the Jackrabbits ahead, 30-7.
Griess ended the dual on a great note for Navy, defeating No. 32 Luke Rasmussen by fall (6:08). Griess held a 16-1 lead in the match before he pinned Rasmussen.
The Mids will head back on the road next weekend for a pair of EIWA duals. Navy will take on its longest rival, Lehigh, next Saturday in Bethlehem, Pa., and then travel to Vestal, N.Y., to battle Binghamton on Sunday. Both duals will start at 2 p.m.

Virginia Duals Notes
• Navy’s winning streak ended at eight, which was its longest since it won 10-straight duals between the 2004-05 and 2005-06 campaigns
• The Mids are 24-19 in their 11 appearances at the Virginia Duals
• Cerniglia extended his winning streak to 10 matches and improved to 5-1 in duals this season. The senior is now 20-4 in duals in his career and owns the best winning percentage on the team (83.3)
