Nearly a third of French people misuse their medication

As more and more French people adapt the dosage of their drugs, the ANSM has decided to act with a preventive campaign.

Whether it is as part of a treatment lasting several days or following a minor health problem, medication helps to get us back on our feet. Moreover, many of them are offered without a prescription to treat us without going to the doctor. However, the dosage would not always be respected.

The French are also bad students in this area. The ANSM, the National Agency for the Safety of Medicines, has conducted a survey on our habits with regard to medicines. Gold, 3 out of 10 people would not respect the prescriptions health professionals. They would adapt the duration of the treatment, but also the doses they consume.

Faced with these potentially dangerous behaviors, the ANSM has set up an awareness campaign symbolized by a strong sentence.

“Medicines are not ordinary products, do not take them lightly.”

During the study, the ANSM found that approximately one in 5 patients takes a higher dosage than recommended. However, this type of behavior can be dangerous. It can cause vomiting, loss of consciousness or breathing difficulties in the most serious cases.

Even more surprising: the study reveals that 34% of respondents believe that consuming an expired treatment is safe. However, the latter can be ineffective. Moreover, it can even become harmful if it is kept in bad conditions.

The ANSM is concerned about this lack of information from patients and a certain carelessness in taking medication. And to raise awareness, she chose to shake up the public by comparing treatment habits with some of our daily actions.

A dedicated site and several posters designed to make the public react

In a series of 4 posters, the agency compares certain drug practices such as sharing a treatment or a tool with your neighbour. Through these drawings and these sentences, she wants to remind that each treatment is prescribed in the face of a specific situation. It does not take into account everyone’s medical records and can even be dangerous.

The agency also wants to encourage the public to always inquire with health professionals. Whether it is a general practitioner, a pharmacist or a specialist, medical personnel can provide free drug advice. In addition, they can offer suitable over-the-counter treatments and collect expired or unused treatments.

Through this campaign, the ANSM wants to avoid complications following an incorrect dosage and encourage the French to take each treatment seriously.
