The European Union (EU) “swallowed” the undermining of Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 by its closest ally, the United States, says Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya. He called it “subservience” to the US and accused the EU of trying to “sweep the facts under the carpet.”
Mr. Nebenzya spoke at a meeting of the UN Security Council. He called the countries of Europe dependent and expressed the opinion that after such “gross political and economic miscalculations” the chances of the EU “to become one of the poles of the emerging multipolar world tend to zero.”
“There has never been such impotence in the economic sphere, such servility to the United States in the history of Europe … Brussels silently swallowed the blowing up of its closest ally of the main gas pipeline, which was also paid for by European investors. Now they are trying to sweep all the inconvenient facts under the rug so as not to displease Washington,” he says (quoted by TASS).
Explosions at Nord Stream and the uncommissioned Nord Stream 2 occurred on September 26, 2022. On February 8, 2023, journalist Seymour Hersh published an article entitled “How America Destroyed the Nord Stream Gas Pipeline”. It claimed, citing one source “with direct knowledge of operational planning,” that the bombings were a covert US operation. The US White House called this information a lie, the European Commission – speculation. The Kremlin has said that Russia has a negative view of being prevented from taking part in the investigation into the bombings.
