Nebraska football has dismissed redshirt freshman running back Tikey Hayes from the program, a development that alters the Cornhuskers’ backfield depth just weeks ahead of the new season. The roster move comes roughly a month after the transfer committed to Lincoln for his sophomore campaign.

Program sources confirmed the dismissal on Monday, Aug. 17, though athletic department officials have not released an official statement detailing the specific reasons behind the roster cut.

Hayes arrived on campus in July following an eventful and transient collegiate trajectory. He originally began his college career at Penn State, where he saw limited action as a freshman, appearing in a single contest during the Nittany Lions’ 22-10 victory over Clemson in the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl, where he recorded three carries for 18 yards. Following his stint in Happy Valley, he spent the spring and early summer at Iowa Western Community College before committing to the Huskers. Although he never played a snap for the Reivers, he participated in fall camp practices in Lincoln and appeared at Nebraska Football Fan Day on Aug. 8.

Just days before the dismissal became public, Nebraska offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen addressed the media during a fall camp availability on Friday, Aug. 14, offering a candid assessment of the running back room and the transition process for incoming transfers like Hayes. “Tikey still doesn’t understand where he is at. I don’t think he knows who I am yet and is trying to figure things out,” Holgorsen said.

Backfield Adjustments and Depth Implications

With Hayes out of the picture, Nebraska’s backfield competition shifts focus to its remaining scholarship players and position switches. The running back rotation now centers around sophomores Mekhi Nelson and Isaiah Mozee alongside freshman Jamal Rule. Junior Kwinten Ives and redshirt freshman Conor Booth, a native of Wahoo, Nebraska, are also in the mix for touches.

To bolster depth following various offseason adjustments, the coaching staff moved senior Vincent Genatone—a North Platte native—from linebacker to running back.

Recruiting Pedigree and Career Path

Hayes arrived in college football with significant fanfare. As a high school standout at Aliquippa in Pennsylvania, he was rated as a four-star prospect by Rivals and a three-star recruit by 247 Sports, On3, and ESPN. He ranked as the No. 20 running back and the No. 7 overall prospect in Pennsylvania for the Class of 2025.

His abrupt departure from Lincoln marks the second time this calendar year that the young tailback must evaluate his options and look for a new collegiate home.

As the Cornhuskers continue their fall preparations without Hayes, the focus shifts entirely to the players currently on the practice field. Coaches will look for separation among Nelson, Mozee, Rule, and the rest of the position room as game weeks approach.
