A new study carried out by researchers at Stanford University want to find out if the Apple Watch can help uncover cases of cardiac arrhythmia em childrenaccording to released by MyHealthyApple.
Entitled “Leveraging wearable technologies for arrhythmia detection in children” (our free translation), the study will verify two different elements: first, discover the accuracy of the Apple Watch’s electrocardiogram (ECG) function in tracking children’s heart rates; second, to verify whether prolonged monitoring can help identify arrhythmia events that are not normally detected through clinical monitoring — which has already been verified in adults in a previous study.
During the clinical trial, 100 children/young people aged between 6 and 21 years old, who are currently undergoing arrhythmia monitoring, will be analyzed. During the six-month investigation, participants will wear an Apple Watch (the model of which has not been disclosed), and the study will compare the number of clinically significant arrhythmia events between Apple hardware and standard monitoring devices.
The study could be beneficial, as the heart rate sensor and ECG are currently approved to detect arrhythmia only in people aged 22 and over — according to this Apple support page. Therefore, there is little research on the resources when used in young adults and children under this age.
The study will begin next November and is expected to be completed in December 2024.
