Longtime Wheel of Fortune
announcer Jim Thornton has been suspended by Sony Pictures Television following an undisclosed incident on a May commercial flight to Los Angeles. While the studio investigates the allegations and recasts his role, Thornton's attorney strongly denies any criminal wrongdoing, stating that law enforcement quickly determined no violation occurred.
The May Flight and the Law Enforcement Response at LAX
The events leading up to the suspension center on an American Airlines journey on May 14. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio took action after learning of an incident that occurred on a commercial flight earlier in the year. TMZ first broke the news of the suspension, reporting that a fellow passenger raised concerns with a flight attendant while Thornton allegedly wore a Wheel of Fortune-branded top.
American Airlines confirmed the arrival sequence in an official statement. On May 14, American Airlines Flight 1276 was met by law enforcement upon arrival at Los Angeles International Airport following concerns reported by a customer onboard,
the airline said. Sources cited by Variety indicated that the pilot called ahead to have officers meet the aircraft at the gate.
Sony Pictures Television Suspends the Announcer and Recasts the Role
Sony Pictures Television moved swiftly once the matter came to light. The studio confirmed both the disciplinary action and the ongoing evaluation in a public statement issued on September 1, 2026.
“We have recently been made aware of allegations concerning Jim Thornton. He has been suspended from ‘Wheel of Fortune’ and we are recasting while we conduct a thorough investigation.”

While the studio declined to discuss the specifics of the investigation, Deadline reported that the recasting effort is temporary for now. Production is also facing a complex editing task.
The timing created an odd viewing experience.
Jim Thornton’s Legal Representation Pushes Back Against Defamatory Claims
Following TMZ’s publication of the flight incident, Thornton’s legal counsel issued a sharp rebuttal. USA Today obtained a letter in which the voice actor’s lawyer denounced the defamatory
article for suggesting there was criminal wrongdoing.

“My client did not engage in any illegal conduct, was not arrested, and has not been charged with any crime. When questioned about the complaint made by a fellow passenger on the flight, law enforcement spoke to him for five minutes or less, immediately determined that no wrongdoing had occurred and told my client he was free to go.”

Furthermore, Thornton’s attorney asserted that it was the media outlet’s request for comment that ultimately prompted Sony to launch the internal investigation and issue the suspension.
Fifteen Years Behind the Microphone on Television and Radio
Thornton holds a long-standing position within the franchise. He originally stepped in as a guest announcer following the November 2010 death of legendary announcer Charlie O’Donnell, who had worked on the show for more than 25 years. Thornton officially took over the role for the 29th season in 2011 and has since announced thousands of episodes, alongside his work on ABC’s Celebrity Wheel of Fortune since its launch in 2021.

Beyond his television duties, Thornton built an extensive background in Los Angeles broadcasting. He worked as an afternoon anchor on KNX 1070 Newsradio, joining the station in 1985 as a traffic reporter with Metro Traffic, and provided traffic reports on KCBS-TV. His career also includes voice roles in animated projects such as The Cleveland Show,
Celebrity Deathmatch,
and Monsters, Inc.
Syndicated Television Context and What Lies Ahead
The suspension hits as the syndicate maintains its dominance in television ratings. According to early August Nielsen data cited by The Hollywood Reporter, Wheel of Fortune ranked No. 1 in the syndicated TV space with over 8 million viewers, leading programs like Jeopardy! and Family Feud. The flagship show is currently airing reruns ahead of the Season 44 premiere on September 14, 2026, featuring co-hosts Ryan Seacrest and Vanna White.
Sony Pictures Television has not yet named a permanent or interim successor to fill the announcer booth as the thorough review continues.
