New increases in cruises and full occupancy 2024-04-14 15:00:08

Increases in ticket prices and fares have been recorded on the Adriatic and Crete lines, due to the shipping’s inclusion in the European emissions trading system from 1 January 2024.

The additional cost resulting from the emissions of gaseous pollutants of the ships is passed on to the user of the ship.

The final amounts that a family in Greece has to pay to move to island destinations are frightening. Despite last summer’s actions on individual discounts, in 2024 prices remain high for the average family, who for a few days the Easter she will only have to spend a salary on her transportation to visit the islands of the Northeast Aegean and the Dodecanese.

The cost

A return trip to Rhodes exceeds 850 euros, to Chania 500 euros, to Syros, which is closer to Chania, 540 euros, and to Naxos 650 euros. These costs concern a family of four with a car, without calculating the cost of a cabin, which is necessary on some trips, such as Rhodes, or on the night routes of Crete.

At the same time, there is a huge difference in the prices of conventional ships and high-speed ships, with the cost of transportation for the latter being dizzying for a family. Even more disappointing is the situation for the islanders themselves. If you are a resident of Milos and want to spend your Easter on the nearby island of Mykonos, you will also pay 217 euros for your return, while if you start from Piraeus to Mykonos and back to Piraeus, it will cost you 124 euros.

Completions

Occupancies, three weeks before Easter, are particularly encouraging for the market. There are already no tickets for nearby destinations of Argosaronicos and the Cyclades on the peak days, Maundy Thursday and Maundy Friday and respectively Easter Monday and Tuesday! Accordingly, for the other destinations, occupancy is at 70%-90%. However, travel agencies report that the positive forecasts for the movement of Greek passengers at Easter are to be investigated for the remaining three days, e.g. of the Holy Spirit, and of course about what will happen in the summer. “Everything shows that the cruise market will mainly rely on foreign visitors for the summer”, they report to “ET”.

Requests

As market circles point out, tickets remain expensive, but prices are stable compared to last summer. A basic request of the Association of Passenger Shipping Companies (SEEN) all these years is the reduction of VAT on I.X. from 24% to 13%, as well as maintaining the reduced VAT for passengers, which is at 13%, as the emergency regulation will cease to apply in the summer.

It is recalled that the big jump in ship ticket prices took place in 2022. Within the year, prices increased three times, giving an upward push that exceeded 35%. The main cause of this increase was the successive fuel price hikes, which directly affected the operating costs of ships, also stemming from the difficult financial situation of the pandemic. The omens for marine fuels in 2024 are positive, as prices are stable and in some fuel type categories are also reduced. In the summer of 2023, after meetings of the Maxim Palace with the cruise lines, most companies applied individual discount packages to specific categories of passengers.
