A iFixit revealed today more details about the newly released Mac Studio, by Apple. According to the repair firm, which compared versions with the M1 Ultra (model 2022) and M2 Ultra (2023) chips, the new one is “almost indistinguishable” from the old one.
While a considerable increase in performance was seen, it was clear that Apple chose not to undertake an in-house revamp of Mac Studio. This decision is (probably) due to the absence of striking changes that would justify a complete redesign.
During the disassembly, iFixit also found that Apple used the same components, such as the coolerthe power supply and heat sink, on both Mac Studio models.

While it is possible to remove the preinstalled memory module, the PCIe memory module board and connectors have an unusual shape, making it difficult to replace with third-party components.

These limitations, of course, frustrate users in their quest to expand the device’s memory capacity after purchasing the machine from Apple — something that is currently only possible with the new Mac Pro.
The disassembly video, available in a short version on YouTube Shorts, only reinforces that the new Mac Studio did not bring surprises that would justify something extensive and elaborate. Until the last update of this matter, the company also had not made available a complete article of the teardownas it usually does.
