New Measles Case Confirmed in Wellington: Locations of Interest Identified

Health officials have confirmed a new measles case in Wellington, triggering a sprawling contact-tracing effort across the capital and into neighboring regions as authorities race to contain the highly contagious virus.

A Sprawling Trail of Locations Across the Capital

The National Public Health Service (NPHS) is supporting the infected individual and their close contacts while aggressively mapping out locations of interest visited while the person was infectious. Health New Zealand confirmed that this latest case has no known link to previous infections or international journeys.

The exposure sites span multiple commercial hubs and transport nodes across the Wellington region and beyond. Confirmed public touchpoints include Te Iho at 1 Bowen Street, McDonald’s Mana, the Westpac Wellington Corporate Headquarters in Wellington Central, and the Tākina Wellington Convention and Exhibition Centre in Te Aro. Additional sites identified by health authorities span RE Burger in Palmerston North Central and Mediterranean Foods Trattoria & Deli in Newtown.

Investigators are also probing potential exposure vectors further back in April, noting the infected person may have contracted the virus at the Warbirds Over Wānaka event or the Ultra New Zealand music festival in Wellington.

Dr Susan Jack Urges Residents to Verify Vaccinations

National Protection Clinical Director Dr. Susan Jack urged residents nationwide to monitor closely for symptoms and immediately verify their vaccination histories. Health officials stress that immunization remains the single most effective defense against the virus, which poses severe risks to infants, children, and adults alike.

Measles is a serious and highly infectious illness, which can affect adults as well as children and babies.

Dr. Susan Jack stated, advising anyone with potential symptoms to stay home and phone ahead before visiting a medical clinic to prevent further transmission within healthcare facilities.

The standard clinical presentation begins with a high fever exceeding 38°C, accompanied by a runny nose, cough, and sore, watery pink eyes. A distinctive rash typically emerges a few days later, starting on the face before migrating down the torso to the limbs and lasting up to a week.

The MMR vaccine is free across New Zealand for all children under 18 regardless of immigration status, as well as for adults eligible for publicly funded healthcare. Individuals who suspect exposure or exhibit symptoms are instructed to self-isolate and contact Healthline for guidance.
