New Mexico holds the top spot in the Mountain West football power rankings following a narrow 21-16 victory over North Dakota State, Nevada Sports Net reported.
Defensive Prowess Carries the Lobos
New Mexico sits at 6-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play after fending off North Dakota State. The Lobos’ defense provided the decisive margin when Austin Brawley intercepted a pass and returned it 56 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Offensively, however, New Mexico has struggled lately, producing just 35 points across its last two outings. Quarterback Toa Fa’avae completed 13 of 24 passes for 151 yards without a touchdown and with three interceptions over that span. That efficiency raises concerns as the program pursues a potential CFP berth.
North Dakota State drops to 6-2 overall and 3-2 in conference play after the five-point loss. In its first FBS season, the Bison have suffered only two defeats, both the result of pick-sixes thrown by quarterback Nathan Hayes. Hayes has tossed five interceptions across those two losses, while the NDSU defense surrendered just six points in the UNLV loss and 14 points against New Mexico.
Wyoming Climbs as Air Force Stumbles
Wyoming vaults from fifth to third in the rankings with a 5-3 overall record and a 4-1 conference mark after overwhelming Air Force 28-14. Entering the matchup as a 5.5-point home underdog, the Cowboys doubled up the Falcons to maintain a trend that has seen these two programs trade wins in each of their last six meetings dating back to 2021. Quarterback Tyler Hughes powered the Wyoming attack, accounting for seven touchdowns over the last two games and rushing for 421 yards across his last three appearances.
Air Force slips to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in league play following the loss. Playing without quarterback Liam Szarka for the year, the Falcons’ offense stalled. After running the ball on 95 percent of their plays during their first two post-Szarka contests, the Falcons attempted 15 passes against Wyoming and managed only one touchdown. Three fumbles by the Falcons were also a killer.
UNLV rounds out the top tier at 4-3 overall and 2-1 in conference action, sliding one spot during a bye week due to the transitive property – Air Force beat UNLV and Wyoming beat Air Force. UNLV controls its path toward a spot in the MW title game for the fourth straight season, provided it wins out its final five games, beginning with a home matchup against winless Northern Illinois.
Mid-Tier Shifts and Cellar Battles
Nevada advances to sixth place with a 3-4 record and a 2-2 conference standing following a 28-13 victory over San Jose State. Playing with third-string quarterback Luke Duncan, the Wolf Pack secured a turnover-free performance from the quarterback, who threw two touchdowns. San Jose State falls to 4-4 and 2-2 after utilizing three different quarterbacks in the loss. After Daniel Rolovich and Robert McDaniel combined for just 76 yards and three points across 11 series, the Spartans inserted Luke Weaver in the fourth quarter, where he engineered 128 yards and 10 points over three series.
Hawaii snapped a four-game skid by routing Northern Illinois 56-21, improving to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the conference. Quarterback Micah Alejado threw for 323 yards and three scores, while running back DeVon Rice rushed for three touchdowns. The Rainbow Warriors now enjoy a bye week before traveling to face UTEP.
UTEP stands at 1-6 and 0-3 after a bye week, preparing to visit North Dakota State. The Miners remain winless against FBS schools and have been outscored by 206 points across those losses. Northern Illinois anchors the standings at 0-7 overall and 0-3 in the conference following the loss to Hawaii. Five of the Huskies’ six FBS losses have come by at least 20 points, prompting an intensified coaching search under an interim head coach.
